Greenwood Gaming and Entertainment Inc., the operator of Parx, announced these plans during its re-licensing hearing in front of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. With an unanimous vote, Greenwood Gaming and Entertainment Inc. had their license renewed.

Mohegan Sun Pocono had their sports betting license approved by the gaming board on Wednesday, becoming the eighth casino in Pennsylvania licensed for sports gambling.

As the state’s largest casino, Parx has generated $2.6 billion in tax revenue since opening its doors in 2006. While more than 90 percent of that revenue came from slot machines, a shift in these numbers is likely coming with the legalization of sports betting in Pennsylvania.

The state’s casinos have generated $5.5 million in gross revenue on $44.5 million in bets in March. While this figure represents less than 16 percent of the revenue  generated through legal sports betting in New Jersey, it is a promising start for Pennsylvania as nearly 80 percent of New Jersey’s sports betting occurred via online sports betting.

With Parx and other casinos, such as Sugarhouse and Rivers, gearing up for the launch of online sports betting in the coming weeks, Pennsylvania should expect significant growth in the tax revenue generated by the casinos.
