Anyway, here’s what stood out to me in the Phillies’ latest loss.

Bullpen Questions

If you’ve been a bit worried about the Phillies’ bullpen lately, it has not been without merit.

The unit entered Sunday with a 6.41 ERA in July, the worst in baseball. While the numbers improved after five Phillies’ relievers combined to allow one earned run over five innings of work in the series finale, that one earned run loomed large, and it won’t do anything to quiet concerns over one of the bullpen’s key pieces.

While Jose Alvarado has shown improved command over his last three appearances and surrendered what could be considered a fluke home run to a left-handed batter (it was the first he’s coughed up since 2022), it doesn’t change the fact he has had a brutal month.

In nine July appearances, Alvarado has surrendered eight earned runs over 8 1/3 innings pitched. He’s also allowed runs in five of those nine outings, so his recent poor numbers are not a product of one blowup performance.

While Carlos Estevez should provide the Phillies with another reliable option to navigate the late innings, it’s worth wondering how equipped they are to handle tight spots from the left side.

You have to feel good about Matt Strahm. Beyond him? How are you feeling about the combination of Alvarado and Gregory Soto in this current moment?

You know what, don’t answer that.

Not So Fast, Bryson

For the purposes of full disclosure, I wrote the following before Edmundo Sosa’s 1-for-3 game and Bryson Stott’s failed pinch-hit appearance. The point is not about what Sosa did Sunday, it’s about what Stott wasn’t given the opportunity to do.

From May 21 through July 26, Stott hit .199 with a .510 OPS. On their most recent six-game road trip, he sat twice and went just 2-for-14, sinking his season average down to .233. It has been an ugly go of it for the 26-year-old. But after nearly two months of searching for a spark, Stott finally showed signs of life this weekend in going 4-for-8 over the first two games against the Guardians — only to sit Sunday against a rookie left-hander making his major league debut.

On paper, the decision to go with Sosa over Stott against a lefty is a borderline no-brainer. Sosa entered Sunday with a .955 OPS against left-handed pitching this season. That’s far superior to Stott’s .630 OPS.

Still, if the thought is Stott is a core everyday guy, an idea that is generally accepted as truth, it’s a bit curious (to me, at least) he wasn’t afforded an opportunity keep his burst of momentum rolling with a start in the finale.

His recent usage makes me wonder just how the Phillies view him in the current moment.

Anyone But You

Guardians starter Joey Cantillo had a great major-league debut — if you take Kyle Schwarber’s two at-bats and 802 feet of homers out of the equation.

Schwarber took Cantillo’s third career big league pitch 106.4 mph the other way for a leadoff homer. Two innings later, Schwarber yanked his second of the game, this time over the right field wall.

• Schwarber vs. Cantillo: 2-for-2, 2 HR, 3 RBI
• Rest of lineup vs. Cantillo: 2-for-13, 0 XBH, 2 BB, 0 RBI

Speaking of Schwarber, after going 2-for-23 with zero extra-base hits over the first six games following the all-star break, he bounced back by going 6-for-11 with a walk against the Guardians, including three homers and two doubles. With his two homers off Cantillo, he now has a 1.041 OPS against left-handed pitching this season.

If You Can Do It Once

The fourth-inning infield single by David Fry that preceded JhonKensy Noel’s game-tying three-run homer was correctly scored. Trea Turner briefly hesitated and stumbled before making a backhand dive that resulted in the ball kicking off his glove.

A tough play, sure, but it’s a play Turner should make. In fact, it’s a play he can and did make the following inning when he laid out to his backhand side and stole a base-hit from Bo Naylor.

“It looked like he slipped, or something, and couldn’t get in front of it,” Rob Thomson said after the game. “When the ball was hit, I was thinking double play.”

Same.

Instead of two outs, the Phillies recorded zero outs, and a comfortable 3-0 lead was soon gone. While the Phillies could have gone ahead and, you know, scored again, this play was a killer.

Gotta Start Somewhere

Brandon Marsh got what has become an increasingly rare start against left-handed pitching, so he had to feel good when he picked up just his eighth hit of the season in 52 at-bats against lefties with a  fourth-inning single.

That said, it’s unlikely Marsh is going to suddenly flip a switch and turn into a viable option against left-handers. He entered Sunday with a .371 OPS against lefties this season. That ranked 284th of 291 MLB hitters with at least 50 plate appearances entering Sunday, but to get even a modest bump out of him in such matchups would be nice.

Still, they were rolled Sunday by an Athletics team that closed the first half 24 games under .500, one that entered Sunday with MLB’s third-worst scoring lineup. That certainly did not matter in the finale, as Oakland lit up Phils pitching for eight total home runs en route to a 18-3 blowout win.

Phillies’ Altered Pitching Plan Fails

In an ideal world, Zack Wheeler’s back doesn’t give him problems, he takes the ball and blows the doors off a bad lineup, the Phillies go into the break on the strength of a 5-1 homestand. Good times had by all.

Instead, the Phillies’ (smart) precautionary approach with Wheeler led to Michael Mercado getting the bulk of innings early. That did not work out.

We’re only four games into Mercado’s Major League career, but it has been a struggle for the 25-year-old.

Command issues have been glaringly apparent, and it’s not just the eight walks in 11 2/3 innings. Pitches like this one won’t play, not even against baseball’s worst lineups.

Command issues aren’t new for Mercado, who walked 4.37 batters per nine with Lehigh Valley this season, a year after issuing 5.07 walks per nine across two levels in 2023.

Maybe the Phillies scale back the demand, turn him back into a one-inning guy where he can let it rip. It became apparent that Mercado had started to tire by the fourth inning and was totally cooked by the sixth.

Maybe they send him back down and see if he can figure things out with some more developmental time and less pressure.

He has shown promise in both spring training and with the Iron Pigs this season, but it’s pretty clear his current multi-inning role isn’t going to work, at least not right now.

Tell Me Without Telling Me

I know the Phillies were down some bullpen arms and needed Mercado to give them a few innings, but letting him face Brent Rooker in the sixth was an interesting choice. I write this while also acknowledging the poor performance(s) that proceeded his, but, man.

Two innings after Rooker took Mercado 450 feet out to center over the batter’s eye, he got him a second time with a two-run shot that basically ended the game.

The decision to stay with Mercado (in real-time, mind you) felt like a step short of telling fans, “Thanks for coming out. We’ll be back Friday night.”

The play from that point forward seemed to confirm that message.

Didn’t See That Coming

If you’re a hitter and you check the numbers of A’s starter Joey Estes, you have to figure you’re going to put runs on the board — especially at home.

Estes entered his start Sunday with a 1-4 record and 9.10 ERA across seven road starts this season, but his road struggles weren’t a factor in this one.

The Phillies managed a first-inning Trea Turner solo homer and little else. In fact, they were held hitless in just two opportunities with runners in scoring position against Estes.

They would have been held to only two runs over six innings had Miguel Andujar not made an embarrassing throwing error that plated a second run on a routine Bryson Stott sacrifice fly.

A Positive From This One

Alec Bohm recorded his 32nd and 33rd doubles, putting him on-pace for 56 this season. That’s only three behind Chuck Klein’s franchise record of 59 set back in 1930.

Turner Has Earned All-Star Start

Maybe it was a little bit questionable when it was announced earlier this month that Turner was voted the National League’s starting shortstop. It’s tough to give a guy who’s missed over 30 games due to injury the nod, and with Elly De La Cruz and a resurgent Francisco Lindor in the midst of strong seasons, it’s even tougher.

But you know what? Turner, who has played only played 57 games this season, has been so good that it really doesn’t matter.

Since his return on June 17, he is 36-for-101 (.356 BA) with nine homers and 23 RBI.

Of National League shortstops with at least 50 games played, Turner ranks number one in batting average, slugging percentage and OPS. He’s second behind only Mookie Betts in on-base percentage.

Given his absurd production when in the lineup, it’s hard to imagine Turner not near the top of the National League MVP odds with Bryce Harper and Shohei Ohtani had he not missed over a month.

Hell, he’s still got the 10th best odds to win the award at FanDuel.

Castellanos, Stott Heading In Opposite Directions

How you look at this next one is all about a matter of perspective, I guess.

On May 18, the Phillies knocked off the Nationals, 4-3, in extra innings.

Nick Castellanos went 0-for-4, dropping his average to .194. His OPS fell to a dismal .556 through 47 games. Conversely, Bryson Stott went 1-for-4, contributing a key seventh-inning homer that tied the game at 2-2. Stott finished the night hitting .280 with an .855 OPS.

Would you have believed it then if I told you that Castellanos, 48 games later, would head into the all-star break with a better OPS than the one held by Stott?

• Castellanos: .679 OPS
• Stott: .676 OPS

Since May 18, Castellanos has been solid. It’s not always pretty (including Sunday), but entering the series finale with the A’s, he put together a .272/.318/.804 slashline during a run that included 22 total extra-base hits and nine homers.

As for Stott, a player who once looked poised to make a serious run at an all-star bid this season, he slashed just .208/.272/.542 in the same timeframe. Perhaps his worst game came Saturday when he went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts (all swinging) and a walk.

For greater context regarding his struggles, Stott’s .205 average dating back to May 19 ranks 20th out of 21 qualified second baseman. His .540 OPS ranks last.

The Phillies have a number of notable key contributors who will stand to benefit from the all-star break. They will certainly hope that Stott is among them.

For what it’s worth, he’s been a better post-break hitter in his short career, posting a .733 second-half OPS against a .684 first-half OPS.

Nola to Start Second Half

Speaking of key contributors who will benefit from some time off, Rob Thomson told reporters Sunday morning that Zack Wheeler and Ranger Suarez won’t face the Pirates in Pittsburgh next weekend.

Instead, they will use the break to give both pitchers, who are each dealing with back troubles, extended rest. Aaron Nola will pitch Friday. Their starter Saturday will depend on if Cristopher Sanchez throws Tuesday night.

A Prolonged Test Is Coming

Thomson also said pregame Sunday the team is targeting Minnesota for the return of J.T. Realmuto.

That’s good news. The Phillies will need as much help as they can get as they navigate a challenging start to the second half schedule.

After three games in Pittsburgh against an improving Pirates squad, they will play 19 consecutive games against teams with a winning record.

During said stretch, they will face the AL East’s second best team  (Yankees) and the AL Central’s top two teams (Guardians and Twins).

That’s all before a 10-game trip that features the AL West-leading Mariners, NL West-leading Dodgers and the defending National League Champion (as if you needed a reminder) Diamondbacks.

Entering Sunday, the combined record of the Phillies’ first seven second-half opponents stood at 374-296 (.558 winning percentage). That’s no joke.

Two starts, two wins, 14 innings, one earned run allowed and a four-year contract worth at least $22.5 million.

Sánchez immediately made good on his new deal, tossing seven shutout innings while limiting the Diamondbacks to all of three baserunners.

His 2.67 ERA ranks third among all National League starting pitchers, trailing only Ranger Suarez (1.75 ERA).

The Phillies figure to send a number of players to the MLB All-Star game next month, but it’s getting harder to overlook the possibility of Sánchez joining the mix.

Despite opponents hitting a stellar .262 against him this season, he has done a good job limiting walks while keeping the ball in the park. His one home run allowed this season is by far the stingiest of qualified National League starting pitchers. Logan Webb has allowed the next fewest — with five.

Sánchez’s latest outstanding effort probably could have lasted longer given his day ended at only 80 pitches. He needed just 28 pitches to get through his final three innings (h/t Mike McGarry, who I stole this from).

The 95 degree weather in South Philly played a part.

“Yeah, during the first three innings, I was thinking to myself, I was going to die here,” Sánchez joked after the game. “But I guess that’s a part of the game, and that’s something that I thought of when I added some muscle this offseason.”

Rob Thomson noted that extended down time for José Alvarado and Jeff Hoffman also played a part in making the call.

Either way, Sánchez helped propel the Phillies to a feel-good series win over the Diamondbacks while also ensuring a winning six-game homestand.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been here, so let’s get to some observations.

Bryce Harper Is in MVP Position

Two more hits for Bryce Harper Sunday, who’s now hitting .297 this season. As the Phillies near the midway point of the regular season, Harper is very much in the MVP conversation. In fact, oddsmakers at FanDuel currently have the award sized up as a two-man race.

Shohei Ohtani (-120) has the best odds with Harper (+230) in striking distance. A huge gap follows with Freddie Freeman, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Marcell Ozuna (+1300) trailing far behind.

Maybe it’s just me, but it feels like there is another gear for Harper to find this season, a scary thought for opposing pitchers given he’s fifth in on-base percentage, third in slugging and third in OPS among all NL hitters. He’s also third in homers, fourth in walks and sixth in runs batted in.

Want a take? I think +230 sounds good right about now.

While nobody is going to give a $20 million per year player flowers for hitting .226, his in-progress bounce back has been impressive.

Through May 3, he held a .180 average and gruesome .488 OPS. He was borderline unplayable, and questions understandably emerged about his everyday usage, questions like:

Why the hell are they playing this guy every day? 

It was a fair question. At the time, Castellanos was arguably the least productive hitter in the sport.

Here’s how he stacked up against all qualified MLB hitters on May 3:

• .180 BA (167 of 174)
• .242 OBP (167 of 174)
• .246 SLG (171 of 174)
• .488 OPS (172 of 174)
• 40 wRC+ (170 of 174)

Despite questions about how much longer the Phillies could continue to trot him out there, they just kept doing it. Good call.

Entering play Sunday, Castellanos used a 43-game stretch in which he hit .257 with an .804 OPS to get his average up to .225 with a more respectable .672 OPS.

While his progress has not been linear, a fact highlighted by a rough 1-for-19 stretch against the Red Sox and Orioles earlier this month, he is making good on the team’s faith. Not to take any credit away from the Phillies’ resolve, but their decision to grind through Castellanos’ struggles has always been the logical one — even as things got ugly.

Coming off a season in which he produced 68 total extra-base hits and 106 RBI, he, by far, represents the most upside among any of the Phillies’ other outfield options, a group that entered Sunday with a .651 OPS.

His inclusion in certain lineups during the height of his struggles may not have made for the optimal matchup in a given moment, but there are larger goals at play. Working to unlock his upside was and is more important than optimizing the immediate matchup.

Alec Bohm Just Keeps Hitting

You can file away my questioning of Alec Bohm with all of my other bad takes.

On the June 14 episode of Crossed Up: A Phillies Podcast, I pointed out that Bohm’s MVP-level play of April was long gone (which, at the time, was correct), noting his OPS dropped from 1.018 on May 1 to .797 entering the Phillies’ series in Baltimore.

Over a 35-game stretch, Bohm slashed .201/.258/.343. His latest bout with inconsistency that splashed cold water on the idea he was making some significant jump offensively.

All he has done in nine games since then is go 16-for-37 (.432 BA).

Is he a perfect player? No, but Bohm, who’s on track for 54 doubles and 129 RBI, leads all National League third baseman in batting average and OPS while ranking second in both on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

That will do.

Brandon Marsh Sets the Tone

Brandon Marsh prevented early trouble for Sánchez  by smoothly flagging down a 101 mph shot into the right field alley off the bat of Christian Walker. Despite some extra carry, Marsh made the catch in front of the wall while leaping to steal extra bases on a ball that would have left 9 of 30 MLB parks.

Centerfield defense was a topic of conversation last Wednesday against the Padres when Marsh failed to bring in a sinking liner that plated three runs and broke open a 5-2 San Diego victory.

It was a tough play, but it was one that also predictably prompted tons of shortsighted second guessing and bitching over the recent demotion of Johan Rojas.

Advanced defensive metrics back up what your eyes tell you — Marsh is better in left than he is in center, but it’s not like he’s a mess out there.

He has posted +15 defensive runs saved across 1,088.2 career defensive innings in left field. He had -6 DRS in 1,952 defensive innings in center before Sunday.

His robbery of Walker set the tone in helping the Phillies to earn a series victory, especially as the offense struggled to separate early.

If his defense was a talking point Wednesday, then it should be a talking point after this one too.

There’s starting pitching and the stars, of course. Don’t forget the handful of relievers capable of wiping away opponents late in games. And you know what? If you’re a pessimist, go ahead, scratch the itch. Mention the soft schedule.

But for a team to go 15 consecutive series without a loss (11-0-4), which according to the Phillies PR staff stands as the longest single-season run in franchise history, it has to be deep. It must get contributions from all parts of the roster.

That’s certainly happening right now.

Edmundo Sosa provided a key three-run homer Wednesday night before delivering a three-hit game Thursday. One of those hits resulted in a run when Cristian Pache stroked a two-run go-ahead triple in the fourth:

It was Pache’s second hit of the day with runners in scoring position, and it helped spark the Phillies’ 37th win in 51 games out of the gate.

Despite hitting just .225 this season, five of Pache’s nine total hits have come with runners in scoring position.

Realmuto Continues Resurgence

J.T. Realmuto may not be the unanimous best catcher in baseball these days, but he’s doing just fine.

He extended a career-best 13-game hitting streak with an opposite field solo shot that tied the game in the third. Realmuto has now hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games, going 25-for-71 (.352 BA).

Since the start of that stretch, which began on April 28th, he has lifted his batting average from .237 to .285 while jumping his OPS from .685 to .792. In doing so, Realmuto has put himself back into the conversation for a fourth career National League All-Star selection.

A lot of people thought JT Realmuto was done as an elite-hitting catcher, and it wasn’t that crazy of a take. Yet as it stands right now he’s having one of the 3 best seasons of his career by wRC+.

But there’s still some work to do on that front.

Among NL catchers, he currently ranks fourth in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage, trailing only William Contreras, Elias Diaz, and Will Smith in all three categories.

Eh, Shut Up

Lots of tweets, lots of chatter about the Phillies’ weak schedule. It’s coming from everywhere – area pessimists, prominent national baseball guys and, of course, Braves fans.

Sure, you could simply pay attention and conclude this is a talented team that can beat opponents in a variety of ways.

Alternatively, you could probably just take a quick glance at the 37-14 record and conclude it’s a pretty good mark. You could also note the Phillies’ recent postseason runs and come away knowing this isn’t exactly a smoke and mirrors job.

But, if reality still eludes you, may I offer this:

Dating back to May 27th of last season, the Phillies have played 162 regular season games and have won an MLB-best 103 of them.

If you would like to discredit their remarkable start, you’ll have also have to discredit an entire regular season’s worth of success by what is largely the same roster.

People Forget

The 162-game stretch referenced above began last Memorial Day Weekend with a 2-1 win over the Braves. Zack Wheeler went eight scoreless innings that day, allowing three hits and a walk against 12 strikeouts.

He wasn’t quite as sharp in his seven innings of two-run baseball against the Rangers Thursday, but he was still pretty damn good.

Wheeler cruised through 6 2/3 innings with his only blemish an elevated sinker to Aroldis Garcia that was cranked to left for a solo homer in the second inning. It was smooth sailing from there until the seventh inning when the final out of his day proved to be a challenge. Four straight Texas hitters reached base with two outs. Protecting a 4-2 lead with the bases loaded, Wheeler prevented further damage by working his way out of the jam.

Ranger Suarez has understandably gotten most of the hype, but Wheeler (+300) remains the betting favorite for the NL Cy Young Award. He holds a 2.52 ERA through 11 starts and leads MLB in innings pitched while holding opponents to a .184 batting average.

Get an early lead, let dominant starting pitching take it from there.

Things didn’t quite work out that way, but no problem. They instead tapped into another emerging successful formula: fall behind, let Kody Clemens handle it.

A day after Clemens saved the Phillies with a thrilling game-tying homer with two outs in the ninth, he was back in the middle of the action in the series finale.

The scorching-hot Clemens, who’s now hitting .321 with a 1.166 OPS in 28 at-bats this season, scored the first run after starting the second inning with a leadoff double. A few innings later, his two-run double broke a 3-3 tie and helped propel the Phillies to their 34th win in 48 games.

At 34-14, the Phillies have equaled their best start through 48 games in franchise history, one first set by the 1976 team (102 wins) and 1993 squad (97 wins).

If the Phillies win Tuesday night, they will tie the ’76 squad for the best record in franchise history through 49 games. If they win their next two games, they will own the franchise record for best start through 50 games.

You almost can’t talk about this team right now without mentioning how historically good they’ve been, and that’s not just in relation to the club’s own history.

Thanks to the Phillies communications department for the following notes:

• Only 16 National League teams since 1954 had won 33 times through their first 47 games. Every single one of those teams went on to win the division while 10 won the National League pennant.
• Since the turn of the century, only four teams in Major League Baseball have started 34-14 or better.
• Since 1986, only four other National League teams have started 34-14 or better. The last team to do it was the 2016 Chicago Cubs.

There’s more. Consider the following:

• The Phillies haven’t lost a series since they dropped the final game of a three-game set with the Reds back on April 3.
• They’ve swept six series this season.
• They still haven’t lost back-to-back games since April 23-24.
• Over their last 23 games, the Phillies have won 19 times. In the other four games, they had the potential tying run at the plate in the ninth inning or later.

Aaron Nola, Also Good

Lost in the Phillies’ latest offensive explosion was yet another outstanding start by Aaron Nola.

Given the amount of attention to the fantastic work of Ranger Suarez and Zack Wheeler thus far, Nola’s efforts have been somewhat overlooked.

Following seven strong innings in which he allowed only two hits and two earned runs, he holds a 3.05 ERA through 10 starts.

In Wheeler, Suarez and Nola, the Phillies have three of top-14 ERAs among National League starting pitchers:

• Suarez (2nd)
• Wheeler (7th)
• Nola (14th)

In case you’re wondering, Cristopher Sanchez checks in at 19th with a 3.31 ERA.

Alec Bohm: Run Producing Machine

Alec Bohm began his day with a pair of sacrifice flies that represented his 38th and 39th runs batted in of the season. Had his day ended there, he would have finished it on-pace to drive in 132 runs over 162 games.

His day did not end there.

In the eighth inning, he launched a three-run blast into the left field seats, raising his season total to an MLB-best 42 RBI. He’s now on-pace to finish with 142 RBI, the most of any Phillies hitter since Ryan Howard drove in 146 runs in 2008.

Extra Help

You would figure with a 34-14 record, the Phillies are firing on all cylinders. Take a high-level view, and that appears to be true.

Excellent run production, elite starting pitching, a tough bullpen that can stifle opponents late.

Dig a bit deeper though and you quickly see they are in the midst of this historical start despite little offensive return from both their primary center and right fielders.

That’s why it was encouraging that Nick Castellanos and Johan Rojas both contributed in this one.

Following a six-game stretch in which Castellanos went 2-for-22 and saw his average drop to .194, he responded with a three-hit day. It was his first multi-hit game since May 8.

Rojas also added a single, swiped a bag and scored a run.

Here’s what the pair had done entering Sunday:

• Castellanos: 34-for-175 (.194 BA), eight total extra-base hits, .556 OPS
• Rojas: 29-for-127 (.228 BA), six extra-base hits, .584 OPS.

Combined, the two produced a .209 BA, .266 on-base percentage and .567 OPS.

Their struggles are largely responsible for the Phillies’ overall lack of offensive production from the outfield.

Here’s how the group stacked up entering Sunday:

• .218 BA (23rd)
• .329 SLG (25th)
• .279 OBP (27th)
• .609 OPS (28th)

In fairness, Rojas has mostly met his offensive expectations, albeit modest ones. It really comes down to Castellanos. If he gets it going, one of the game’s best lineups might become unstoppable.

Where’s Whit?

You may have noticed Whit Merrifield did not start any of the Phillies’ three games this weekend. It’s not all that hard to figure why.

Merrifield, who’s hitting just .188 in 26 games, is in the midst of his second prolonged slump this season.

After a promising stretch from April 19 through May 7 in which Merrifield hit safely in eight straight games while going 11-for-29 (.379 BA), he has just two hits in his last 28 at-bats.

Over his last eight games, he’s produced a .295 OPS.

While Merrifield’s recent slide could be chalked up to an especially tough run over a short sample of games, his overall struggles can’t be attributed to poor luck.

He’s simply not making consistent quality contact.

According to Statcast, Merrifield’s 13.0% HardHit% is the lowest of any player who has put at least 70 balls in play this season. His 82.3 mph average exit velocity is MLB’s second-lowest. Only Toronto’s Isiah Kiner-Falefa (82.1 mph) holds a lower average exit velo.

Merrifield has a multi-year track record of success. That shouldn’t be discounted simply because of an underwhelming start through 85 at-bats, but it’s fair to wonder about his already decreasing role with Trea Turner’s return looming.

Much like the Taijuan Walker/Spencer Turnbull rotation logjam, the Phillies might have another potential future roster dilemma that would make several teams envious.

Edmundo Sosa has seemingly moved ahead of Merrifield as the preferred infield replacement, while Clemens, who stole the show this weekend and owns a 1.166 OPS, has provided offensive punch from the left side in spot duty.

It still stands to reason that Merrifield holds a roster advantage because he can man left field. The $8 million guaranteed deal doesn’t hurt either.

But as my Crossed Up: A Phillies Podcast partner Anthony SanFilippo asked me Sunday morning, is there a world in which the Phillies opt to roll with Clemens and Cristian Pache, leaving Merrifield the odd man out?

That outcome still feels unlikely, but is it impossible?
